Alice Brown '65 Donates to Harold Schiffman Music Library

L-R: Music Librarian Sarah Dorsey with Alice Brown '65 Alice Garrett Brown ('65) completed her reunion gift by naming a carrel in the Schiffman Music Library.  Alice, who has given her oral history for the African American Institutional Memory Project, was a music teacher for 36 years in both Greensboro and Randolph County.  Her gift, she says, combined her love of both music and libraries. Her reunion gift also included a gift for the Quad Renovation and the African American Institutional Memory Project. We are grateful for Alice’s generosity.

Louise Talma Concert on October 2 to Celebrate the UNCG Linda Arnold Carlisle Research Grant Awarded to Music Librarian Sarah Dorsey

Sarah Dorsey Louise Talma Sarah B. Dorsey, Head of UNCG's Harold Schiffman Music Library, is the recipient of the 2014-15 Women’s and Gender Studies Linda Arnold Carlisle Research Grant Award. Dorsey’s award supports her work on a biography of composer, pianist and pedagogue, Louise Talma (1906-1996), which she will complete while on Research Assignment during the spring semester of 2016. Talma was a pioneering American composer of the twentieth century. The second female composer to receive a Guggenheim fellowship, she was the first to win two consecutively (in 1946 and ‘47). She was the first American to teach with famed French pedagogue Nadia Boulanger at Fontainebleau. Thirteen years after receiving an award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters for her three act grand opera ( The Alcestiad , written on a libretto by Thornton Wilder), Talma was finally invited to join the august institution in 1974, the first female composer so honored. Jones Honored as Outstanding Student Library Worker

Exciting Changes at the Harold Schiffman Music Library

photo by Sarah Dorsey What a difference color (and new shelving and furniture) make!    So says Music Librarian Sarah Dorsey, noting that visitors will find that the Harold Schiffman Music Library has undergone renovation following the recent naming of the library for composer and Greensboro native Harold Schiffman. As reported in June ,   the Music Library was named in honor of a large planned gift from Schiffman and his wife Dr. Jane Perry-Camp.   At the time, Dean John Deal of the School of Music, Theatre and Dance noted "This generous bequest from Harold Schiffman and Jane Perry-Camp, along with their previous gifts to the Jackson Library, constitute the largest gift to the School of Music, Theatre and Dance since its inception in 2010 and to the School of Music since 2001.  The scholarship endowment component will provide financial assistance to hundreds of future music students.  It is truly a transformational gift.  We are tremendously ...

UNCG Receives Major Gift to Support Music: Music Library to be Named in Honor of Greensboro-born Composer Harold Schiffman

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro announces a $2 million planned gift from Dr. Harold A. Schiffman and Dr. Jane Perry-Camp.   The couple’s gift will provide music scholarships and support the University Libraries, and the Music Library will be named for this gift.   A naming ceremony will take place in September. Dr. Schiffman was born in Greensboro.  “ During my childhood days,” Schiffman says, “ the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina (now UNCG) was very important, even crucial, to my development as a musician.  I attended many concerts and even had some performances of my music there.  Now, UNCG has become a home for my musical archive, and I am truly grateful for the wonderful care for it from the staff of the Jackson Library and the School of Music, Theater, and Dance.”   John Deal, Dean of the School of Music, Theatre and Dance at UNCG, says, "This generous bequest from Harold Schiffman and Jane Perry-Camp, along ...
