Tickets are on sale for the Friends of the UNCG Libraries dinner, and they’re going fast. The annual fundraiser for UNCG’s libraries will be March 22 at 6 p.m. in the Elliot University Center’s Cone Ballroom. The guest speaker will be New York Times Bestselling Author Chris Bohjalian. He has written 18 books, including “Midwives” and “The Sandcastle Girls.” Tickets, which include dinner, are $60 for members and $70 for nonmembers. Tickets for the program only are $22. Table sponsorships are available for $650 and include 8 tickets, preferential seating and recognition at the event. Reservations are required and may be purchased online through the Triad Stage Box Office online or by calling 336-272-0160. A professor in the department of anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, she is the former vice president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and serves on the National Police Services Advisory Council in Canada.  Reichs’ own life, as much as her novels, is the basis for the long-running TV show Bones . Nikki Giovanni Author, poet, essayist, and professor Nikki Giovanni will address the Friends of the UNCG Libraries Annual Dinner on March 6, 2014 in the Elliott University Center on the UNCG campus.  Giovanni will present "An Evening of Poetry, Love, and Enlightenment."  Some of her books will be for sale at the event, and there will be a book signing following her presentation.     Giovanni's visit will be made possible in large measure through the generosity of Woman's College alumna Kat Rorison ('46). John Shelton Reed John Shelton Reed, an acclaimed humorist on southern culture who once compared the modern South to a pair of comfortable tattered jeans, will be the speaker at the annual meeting of the Friends of the UNCG Libraries. The dinner gathering will be April 29 at Cone Ballroom in the Elliott University Center. The William Rand Kenan, Jr. professor emeritus of sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Reed has written widely and spoken often, seriously and wittingly, about the ways of the South.   The novelist Lee Smith summed up Reed as "hysterically funny and the most astute observer of the South that we have." Celebrate the blues! That’s the theme of the Friends of the UNCG Libraries annual dinner coming up on March 28, 2012 at the Elliott University Center on the UNCG campus. That evening, the Friends will welcome William R. Ferris and Lorenzo (Logie) Meachum to the stage for an evening focusing on blues music. Ferris is a widely recognized leader in Southern studies, African American music and folklore, who has written or edited ten books and created fifteen documentary films. His book Give My Poor Heart Ease:Voices of the Mississippi Blues will be the basis of his presentation and will be featured at the book signing which follows. The former chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities and now teaching at UNC Chapel Hill, Ferris has conducted thousands of interviews with musicians ranging from the famous (B.B. It’s a two-author-for-one deal at this year’s Friends of the UNCG Libraries dinner. Lee Smith, novelist and short story writer, and Hal Crowther, essayist and cultural critic, will headline the dinner Wednesday, March 16. Crowther and Smith, husband and wife, have titled their remarks “Prose and Cons.” The reception begins at 6:30 p.m. in Cone Ballroom, Elliott University Center.
