University Libraries’ faculty were recently honored by the Provost's Office on April 4. The event was sponsored by Provost Dana Dunn and recognized the outstanding contributions and achievements of UNCG faculty in research and creative activity.  Omar Ali and Beth Bernhardt Beth Bernhardt─Co-PI on a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the State Library of North Carolina for “The Alternative Textbooks Project” awarded a grant to librarians from J.Y. Joyner Library at East Carolina University and Jackson Library at UNCG to develop a two-pronged approach to alternative textbooks. $184,332 including matching funds over two years. Paula Damasceno De Oliveira has made quite an impression during her time at UNCG, and especially in the University Libraries.  Already named the Libraries' Outstanding Student Worker this year, she has capped her spring semester with the Libraries' Undergraduate Research Award as well. Paula Damasceno De Oliveira has won the 2016 Outstanding Student Library Worker Award.  Paula is a Student Manager in the Digital Media Commons, helping patrons with video, audio, web design, file transfer and conversion, and any technology or software issues that they have.  She also works with 3D print and 3D laser scanning, and is the New Short Film Festival project manager.  In winning the award, Paula was especially cited for her high quality, reliable and timely work; her willingness to assume responsibility; her strong customer service orientation and commitment to mentoring other students; and her efforts to make the Digital Media Commons (DMC) run better.  She conceived the New Short Film Festival, which drew more than 700 submissions this year, which her nominator says is "the most ambitious and unique project that a DMC student has undertaken to date." Paula is also a Lloyd International Honors College student. Congratulations to Paula.

Assistant Head of Research, Outreach and Instruction Amy Harris Houk was recently notified that her article, "Curriculum Mapping in Academic Libraries," was selected by the ALA Library Instruction Round Table's (LIRT's)  as a 2015 Top Twenty article.  The article was published in New Review of Academic Librarianship .  The article may be found in the NC DOCKS institutional repository here .

Retiring Dean of University Libraries Rosann Bazirjian has been awarded the ALCTS Honor Award in recognition of her long standing dedicated service and leadership to the Association.   Founded in 1957, ALCTS is the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services, a division of the American Library Association.   Its members are dedicated to acquisition, identification, cataloging, classification, and preservation of all kinds of library materials; are tasked with developing and coordinating the country’s library resources. ALCTS Honors are given by the ALCTS Board of Directors for outstanding contributions at all levels within ALCTS, stellar dedication to service, uncompromising commitment to excellence, willingness to accept challenges, and a sustained and exemplary record of moving ALCTS forward.

The March 1, 2016 cover of Library Journal , one of the most respected journals in the field, brought welcome news to UNCG.  It features our own Brown Biggers, named Paralibrarian of the Year. Nancy Fogarty Two UNCG Librarians were among those recognized at the recent Biennial Conference of the North Carolina Library Association in Greensboro. Retired Reference Librarian Nancy Fogarty was awarded the Lifetime Membership Award, which is presented to a professional librarian who is no longer actively engaged in library work and whose contributions to the state and to the profession were especially notable. Gerald Holmes Gerald Holmes received the Distinguished Library Service Award which marks distinguished professional library services to North Carolina, significant service or other professional contributions provided during either a short or long span of time, and service resulting in a regional or national impact on librarianship in general.

UNCG Business Librarian Steve Cramer has won the PrivCo Prize for Excellence in Business Librarianship.  The PrivCo Prize is awarded to the librarian deemed best to embody the core values of the profession, and the winner is selected by an independent committee of leading business librarians committed to the adoption of best practices in the community. Ann Perdue of Access Services has received the University Libraries Staff Service Award for 2015. Ann Perdue The University Libraries Staff Service Award was established in 1997 upon the retirement of Martha Ransley, former Head of the Circulation Department "to recognize and reward members of the SPA Library Staff who provide outstanding leadership and service in furthering the accomplishment of the mission of the Library to provide service to students, faculty, staff and members of the community which the University serves." Ann Perdue with Martha Ransley, who created the Staff Service Award Ann has actually been employed by the library twice -- from 1994-1998 and then coming back from more in 2007.  She started in 1994 as the Circulation Desk Manager, moved into the Stacks Manager position in 1996, left the Library in 1998, but came back in 2007 when the Stacks/Remote Storage Manager position became available. Lynda Kellam Kelsey Cheshire Lynda Kellam is the recipient of the 2015 NewsBank/Readex/GODORT/ALA Catharine J. Reynolds Award. This award provides funding for research in the field of documents librarianship, or in a related area that would benefit the individual's performance as a documents librarian or make a contribution to the field. Lynda’s work with the North Carolina Library Association’s Government Resources Section (GRS) certainly makes a significant contribution to our profession. The GRS webinar series “Help! I’m an Accidental Government Information Librarian” has been a valuable source of instruction for accidental and non-accidental government information librarians alike for the past three years. This grant will allow Lynda and GRS to purchase software that will be used to preserve these webinars and make them more accessible through channels such as YouTube and embeddable in LibGuides. Courtney Young, the President of the American Library Association,  joined in the celebration, and also spoke that day at UNCG on "The Importance of Libraries in Student Success."

Mr. Gerald Holmes, Reference Librarian and Diversity Coordinator, University Libraries, University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), has been named the 2014 Achievement in Library Diversity Research Honoree. As part of its ongoing support of the propagation of library-based diversity research, the ALA Council Committee on Diversity and the ALA Office for Diversity are pleased to recognize Mr. Holmes for his contributions to the profession and his promotion of diversity within it. The Office for Diversity began designating this honor in 2004. Mr. Holmes’ career has focused on the development of early career librarians, and through that work he has consistently encouraged individuals from underrepresented backgrounds to choose the library profession. He serves as a mentor for many in the profession, and is sought after for guidance on diversity issues. In January, we announced   that Tim Bucknall, assistant dean of libraries and head of electronic resources and information technologies at UNCG had been named   the 2014 Association of College and Research Libraries' (ACRL) Academic/Research Librarian of the Year. The award, sponsored by YBP Library Services, recognizes an outstanding member of the library profession who has made a significant national or international contribution to academic/research librarianship and library development. Bucknall received the $5,000 award during the ACRL President's Program at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the 2014 ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas.   We also took the opportunity this summer to celebrate the achievement with many of Tim’s colleagues in the state and area.   Mary Ellen Davis, executive director of ACRL offered remarks, as did Leah Dunn of UNC Asheville and Dana Sally of Western Carolina who nominated Bucknall for the award.
