UNCG's 2018 Reunion Showcases Academic Libraries in the 21st Century

On Friday, April 20, as part of UNCG's Reunion 2018, librarians in the Research, Outreach and Instruction department provided a workshop to the Class of 1968 entitled, "Books, Bots and Everything in Between!" Led by Amy Harris-Houk and Jenny Dale, participants learned how librarians support student success every day by helping students with research projects and evaluating information online. Alumnae also toured Jackson Library with Kathy Crowe and saw first-hand how students use a variety of learning spaces and technology.  They learned how the Digital Media Commons staff helps students complete their multimedia projects and enjoyed an overview of the makerspace by Armondo Collins.

Jenny Dale Will Lead Book Discussion of "Behind the Beautiful Forevers" on October 24

Jenny Dale, Information Literacy Coordinator in Research, Outreach and Instruction at University Libraries, will lead a book discussion of Behind the Beautiful Forevers:  Life, Death and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity by Katherine Boo on October 24, 2017 at 4 p.m. in the Martha Blakeney Hodges Reading Room, located on the 2nd floor of Jackson Library. The book, chosen as the 2017 UNCG Keker First Year Common Read at UNCG, is based on three years of reporting and the winner of the National Book Award for nonfiction. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the UNCG Libraries and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Stipends Will Provide Support for Information Literacy and Librarian Involvement

The UNCG University Libraries will award stipends to three faculty members to provide support for the revision of their spring 2017 courses to more fully integrate information literacy and increase librarian involvement into the classes. The stipend recipients are: Shana Scudder, English 305 Daniel Christen, Chemistry 355 Liz McNamara, Honors Seminar 228  Dr. Scudder will collaborate with Jenny Dale, University Libraries’ liaison to the English department, and Armondo Collins, Head, University Libraries’ Digital Media Commons, on her contemporary rhetoric class. Students will complete scaffolded information literacy assignments throughout the semester culminating in a final multimedia project. Dr. Christen will collaborate with Karen Grigg, University Libraries’ liaison to the Chemistry department on his intermediate organic chemistry laboratory. UNCG Librarians Lead Webinar for Association of College and Research Libraries on High Impact Educational Practices

Jenny Dale Kathy Crowe First Year Instruction Librarian Jenny Dale and Associate Dean Kathy Crowe led a webinar hosted by ACRL (the Association of College and Research Libraries) on Aug 26. In the webinar, they described their work supporting the development and implementation of High Impact Educational Practices on the UNCG campus.  This interactive webcast provided a review of research on how high impact practices foster student success nationally. Then, using learning communities (LCs) as a case study, it provided information on how LCs contribute to student retention and success, and recommended strategies for partnering with other campus units to promote high impact practices and then use the results to demonstrate the value and impact of the library on its campus.

UNCG Librarians Contribute to New Book: "The Librarian Stereotype"

Lynda Kellam UNCG librarians  Lynda Kellam and Jenny Dale, as well as LIS faculty member Jim Carmichael, have authored chapters in a new publication from the American Library Association entitled T he Librarian Stereotype: Deconstructing Presentations and Perceptions of Information Work , edited by Nicole Pagowsky and Miriam Rigby.    Lynda and Jenny co-authored their chapter, “ At the Corner of Personality and Competencies: Exploring Professional Personas for Librarians”   with UNCG alumna Lauren Pressley, now at Virginia Tech.
