Jenay Solomon, Diversity Resident Librarian Jenay Solomon, Diversity Resident Librarian, will present a poster at the Diversity and Outreach Fair of the 2017 American Library Association (ALA) 's Annual Conference and Exhibition on June 24 in Chicago. Her presentation, "Global Engagement in the Academic Library," highlights University Libraries's programs and services for international students, including its annual Diversity Expo and outreach to faculty. As part of this annual event, the Diversity and Outreach Fair celebrates library services, programs and collections to underserved and under-represented communities.  The ALA is the oldest and largest library association in the world and holds its Annual Conference each summer. University Libraries will host a Diversity and Global Engagement Expo on Thursday, February 16, 2017, from 2 – 5 p.m. in the Reading Room on the first floor of Jackson Library. The expo will feature a collective sharing of music, food, culture and values. Drawings for prizes will also be included. Join UNCG faculty and staff in conversation promoting the importance of diversity and multiculturalism on campus with a panel discussion beginning at 4 p. m. with Dr. Omar Ali. The event is cosponsored by the University Libraries, the Department of International and Global Studies, the Office of Intercultural Engagement, UNCG Campus Activities and Programs and the International Programs Center.

We welcome Jenay Solomon as our 5th Diversity Resident. She began on July 25 and will be with the Libraries for two years. Jenay comes to us from Nebraska where she received her BA in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and her MLS from Emporia State University.  Jenay worked as a Graduate Research Assistant and Graduate Administrative Assistant in the School of Library and Information Management at Emporia State.  She was also a Student Reference Assistant in Research and Information Services and in Diversity and Multicultural Services at the Love Library at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  She was an American Library Association Spectrum Scholar in 2014. In her spare time Jenay enjoys reading, painting, cooking and listening to  variety of music. She lives with her dog, Jade, and cat, Lacey.  She also likes to travel and counts Palau (where her father is from) , England and Scotland among the places she's been so far. Jenay is very excite...

Reference Librarian and Diversity Coordinator Gerald Holmes has recently been honored with two awards.  The General Alumni Association of UNC Chapel Hill has honored him with the Harvey E. Beech Outstanding Alumni Award , which recognizes outstanding black alumni who have been stellar leaders within the University community and/or within their local community.  He will formally receive the award on November 6. The Black Caucus of the American Library Association has recognized Gerald with the Distinguished Service to the Library Profession Award, for his significant and extraordinary contributions in service to the library profession.

Courtney Young, the President of the American Library Association,  joined in the celebration, and also spoke that day at UNCG on "The Importance of Libraries in Student Success."

Mr. Gerald Holmes, Reference Librarian and Diversity Coordinator, University Libraries, University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), has been named the 2014 Achievement in Library Diversity Research Honoree. As part of its ongoing support of the propagation of library-based diversity research, the ALA Council Committee on Diversity and the ALA Office for Diversity are pleased to recognize Mr. Holmes for his contributions to the profession and his promotion of diversity within it. The Office for Diversity began designating this honor in 2004. Mr. Holmes’ career has focused on the development of early career librarians, and through that work he has consistently encouraged individuals from underrepresented backgrounds to choose the library profession. He serves as a mentor for many in the profession, and is sought after for guidance on diversity issues. When The American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Diversity recently awarded 2014-2015 Spectrum Scholarships to 50 exceptional students pursuing graduate degrees in library and information studies, UNCG’s Tiffany Henry was among them. Tiffany is one of our student workers at the University Libraries who works with our NC DOCKS content. From Durham and a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, she is a student in  UNCG’s LIS Program who is interested in pursuing a career in cataloging and metadata work in academic libraries. A prestigious committee of seven jurors selected this year’s Spectrum Scholars based on their commitment to diversity, commitment to entering the library profession, demonstrated community outreach, academic ability and achievements and leadership potential. In 1996, 83-year-old Rosa Parks came to Atlanta for a meeting of the NAACP.   So great was the respect shown her, a special unscheduled book signing was arranged at a local bookstore, and 500 copies of a book of letters written to her were sold and signed over a period of several hours, as Mrs. Parks carefully inscribed each copy. One copy was purchased by Michael Crumpton, then working in the store and now Assistant Dean of the University Libraries.  His copy is now on display in the Reading Room of Jackson Library for Black History Month, sponsored by the Diversity Committee of the University Libraries.   The display may be viewed in cases next to the Reference Desk.
