On October 20, the North Carolina Library Association (NCLA) held its 62nd Biennal Conference in Winston-Salem where its membership elected the following University Libraries' faculty to the Executive Board for the 2017-2019 biennium. Mike Crumpton, Assistant Dean of Administration has been elected to the office of President. Amy Harris Houk, Head of Research, Outreach and Instruction, has been elected as Assistant Treasurer. Lynda Kellam, Librarian for Data Services and Government Information and Assistant Director of International and Global Studies has been elected as the American Library Association Counselor. An affiliate of the American Library Association and the Southeastern Library Association, NCLA is the only statewide organization concerned with the total library community in North Carolina. Its purpose is to promote libraries, library and information services, librarianship, intellectual freedom and literacy. Learn more about NCLA by visiting its website.

University Libraries’ faculty were recently honored by the Provost's Office on April 4. The event was sponsored by Provost Dana Dunn and recognized the outstanding contributions and achievements of UNCG faculty in research and creative activity.  Omar Ali and Beth Bernhardt Beth Bernhardt─Co-PI on a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the State Library of North Carolina for “The Alternative Textbooks Project” awarded a grant to librarians from J.Y. Joyner Library at East Carolina University and Jackson Library at UNCG to develop a two-pronged approach to alternative textbooks. $184,332 including matching funds over two years. The UNCG University Libraries will award stipends to three faculty members to provide support for the revision of their spring 2017 courses to more fully integrate information literacy and increase librarian involvement into the classes. The stipend recipients are: Shana Scudder, English 305 Daniel Christen, Chemistry 355 Liz McNamara, Honors Seminar 228  Dr. Scudder will collaborate with Jenny Dale, University Libraries’ liaison to the English department, and Armondo Collins, Head, University Libraries’ Digital Media Commons, on her contemporary rhetoric class. Students will complete scaffolded information literacy assignments throughout the semester culminating in a final multimedia project. Dr. Christen will collaborate with Karen Grigg, University Libraries’ liaison to the Chemistry department on his intermediate organic chemistry laboratory. Lynda Kellam, Data Services Librarian and Assistant Director of International & Global Studies, has been invited to join the  NMC's Horizon Project Library Panel of Experts , which will produce the  NMC Horizon Report: 2017 Library Edition. These bi-annual reports examines key trends, significant challenges, and important developments in technology for their impact on academic and research libraries worldwide.  The report is a collaboration between the NMC and the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Chur, Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) Hannover, and ETH-Bibliothek Zurich, with the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) as key dissemination partner. Lynda Kellam Karen Grigg UNC Greensboro librarians Lynda Kellam (Data Services and Government Information) and Karen Grigg (Science Liaison librarian) are featured in Databrarianship: The Academic Librarian in Theory and Practice (2016).  Published by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Kellam served as co-editor for the book, and Grigg published a chapter, “Data in the Sciences."  Databrarianship examines how librarians can utilize different methodologies and theories to better curate and organize academic research data. The new release draws “ on the expertise of a diverse community of practitioners, this collection of case studies, original research, survey chapters, and theoretical explorations presents a wide-ranging look at the field of academic data librarianship. ”   Additional information on Databrarianship.

The original series for the North Carolina Library Association (NCLA) began in April 2011 as an educational forum for librarians across North Carolina to learn more about government information, an area of research and support that can be challenging. Over the past few years, the group has produced webinars on a variety of topics from "The Beginner’s Guide to Legislative History” to “Data & Statistics for Researching Education". Lynda Kellam UNCG librarians  Lynda Kellam and Jenny Dale, as well as LIS faculty member Jim Carmichael, have authored chapters in a new publication from the American Library Association entitled T he Librarian Stereotype: Deconstructing Presentations and Perceptions of Information Work , edited by Nicole Pagowsky and Miriam Rigby.    Lynda and Jenny co-authored their chapter, “ At the Corner of Personality and Competencies: Exploring Professional Personas for Librarians”   with UNCG alumna Lauren Pressley, now at Virginia Tech. The end of the academic year brought a series of awards and recognitions for a number of folks who serve in the University Libraries. Cheryl Cross has received the Martha Ransley Staff Service Award. Kathy Crowe was named the co-recipient of the 2012 Student Learning Enhancement Award from the UNCG Senate Student Learning Enhancement Committee. Beth Filar Williams has been elected Vice-Chair/Chair-elect of the University Libraries Section of ACRL, and Lynda Kellam was elected to the similar post of the Law and Political Science Section. Lois Barnes has received the Outstanding Student Worker Award, sponsored by Friends of the UNCG Libraries Board member David Arneke. Among the Library faculty, Amy Harris and Mac Nelson have received tenure, and Joe Williams has been reappointed. Twenty people received service award pins for their years of service , among them Fran Rubio with 40 years, Nancy Ryckman with 35, and Cindy Zaruba with 30.
